The Centurion Chronicles Book Six "Caesar's Revenge"
Caesar & his 10th Legion make camp near Cicero. Fearing a widespread rebellion in Northern Gaul he disperses his army throughout the region. Gaius Favius (1st Legion) is sent to the Morini, Titus Labienus (2nd, 4th, Legions) to the Menapii, Gaius Trebonius (5th, 6th, 9th Legions) to the Aduatuci, Marcus Crassus (3rd Legion) to the Belgae, Lucius Roscius Fabatus (13th Legion) to the Esubii & Lucius Plancus (11th Legion) is ordered to remain in the land of the Carnutes. Cicero (12th legion & reinforced by the 14th Legion) will remain where he is. The Centurion & his century guided by Scout Lutatius Livia are to be a flying squad, going to wherever they are most needed. Indutiomarus, a Treveri chief & Ambiorix, a Eburones Prince meet in Dundutorum & plan an attack against Fabatus’s single legion, hoping to lure Caesar into a trap. Marcus recovers from his wounds. Fabatus is attacked by 26,000 Senones, Carnutes & Treveri warriors. Quintus inadvertently ignores his urgent messages for reinforcements. Believing Caesar & his legion are coming to the rescue half the Gauls hide in a forest so they can ambush him. The Centurion & his century are sent to support Fabatus. After the Centurion attacks the enemy he is captured. The Gauls move their camp. Lutatius & Marcus rescue the Centurion who races back to warn Caesar of the trap the Gauls have set. Caesar has a plan. The Centurion is tasked with capturing or killing Indutiomarus & Ambiorix. Caesar outwits the Gauls & is victorious after a ferocious battle. The Centurion is surrounded & rescued by Caesar who is wounded. The Centurion kills Indutiomarus but Ambiorix escapes. Caesar initiates a policy of slash & burn against the Treveri as punishment. Acco, a duplicitous Senones chief pleads for peace with Caesar. Cicero moves to Sabinus’ & Cotta’s former camp. Duntorum is razed. Ambiorix takes refuge among the Amoricans (the Lexovii, Redones, & Aulerci). At Mediolanum, chief town of the Eburones Bardum, a Druid tells the Centurion that Ambiorix plans to kill Caesar & offers to show the Centurion a shorter way to Caesar’s camp. They fight Aulerci stragglers, are surrounded by enemy cavalry & trapped by Ambiorix who vows to overthrow Roman rule in Northern Gaul after he rouses the Germans. Caesar realizes he is also trapped. Lutatius Livia looks for the Centurion. Caesar defeats the Aulerci. Ambiorix escapes across the Rhine. Livia finds the Centurion. Together they go to Cicero’s camp where they are attacked by German cavalry. Caesar invades Germany & learns the Suebi are waiting to ambush him in the Bacenis forest. The Centurion & Tribune Volusenus go to Ocelum, chief town of the Ubii to hunt for Ambiorix. Caesar marches on the Germans. The Centurion finds Ambiorix who tells him the Germans have crossed the Rhine below the bridge & are about to attack Caesar. The Centurion kills Ambiorix & races to warn Caesar of the impending attack. Cicero informs the Centurion that Caesar has gone to the land of the Menapii. Cicero’s camp is besieged by Germans. Cicero is rescued by Caesar who then goes to Durocortorum where he whips Acco to death. The Centurion presents Caesar with Ambiorix’s head. With peace in Northern Gaul assured Caesar leaves for the assizes & the Centurion goes to Rome where he is faced with an almost insurmountable problem.
