It has been ten years since the return of the dragons and the fall of mankind. Many things have changed since then and humanity is teetering on the brink of extinction.
But back before any of that happened, something else began. Random children from all around the globe had started changing, mutating in strange ways, and neither scientists nor doctors could explain why.
Some children grew extra fingers and toes. Or claws instead of fingernails. Scales or fur instead of bare skin. Vestigial tails or wings. The mutations seemed endless, and totally random.
These special children came to be known as Changelings. Many governments had them rounded up 'for their own protection' and taken to secret laboratories to be experimented upon.
But then technology failed, anarchy reigned briefly and the dragons came back to destroy civilization in a wave of fire and blood.
However, some of the Changelings survived. It turned out that their mutations hadn't been random after all. They had been caused by magic. And so these children were ideally suited to live and thrive on this New Earth. This is a tale of one particular group of special children, who lived in what remained of the city of Ottawa, and of how the world forced them to grow up, step out of the shadows and claim their destiny.
