The Distance: Part 2 Going Under
Ash lies awake at night remembering those three words that Kaimana had uttered to her: “I love youâ€. She never replied to him. It had been months since she had seen him, and the pain of missing him was almost too much to bear. After discovering that her family had survived the triton attack, Ash was commanded to never see the young triton again, and was dragged away to a new home on land. With no ship to return to, Ash and her family were forced to end their life at sea and establish themselves on a nearby island colony. On a particularly misty morning, Ash woke to the sound of a rusty alarm, signalling every port dweller’s worst fear - a pirate invasion. She was instructed to remain calm and allow the horrible men to take whatever treasures and items of value that they pleased. To everyone’s surprise, a large group of tritons also appeared on the shore that day, and, as an even bigger surprise, they directed their violence towards the pirates in defense of the island’s citizens. Ash, ignoring her parent’s warnings, ran straight into the chaos, praying to catch a glimpse of Kaimana. When she sees him, Kaimana returns the gaze with a look of sheer horror, wondering how she could be so reckless as to jump headfirst into a battle. Consequently, her being kidnapped by one of the pirates leads Kaimana to be a hero once again, rescuing her by plunging his weapon deep inside the pirate’s body. His appearance was different than Ash had remembered; his features were more chiseled, his eyes more shark-like and distant, and his head was adorned with some sort of coral headpiece. Ash begins to question him, but he silences her, insisting that there is no time to talk. Instead he takes her underwater, his proximity to her allowing her to breathe, and she is brought to the tritons’ underwater kingdom of Spearheart. It is there that she learns that Kaimana has taken place as prince, although he was not the rightful heir. In order to successfully maintain his leadership, however, he must eat his first human, which he still has not done. Panic settles in Ash’s heart as Kaimana begins to sing a song of death. Other tritons surround the two, and look on in silence. Kaimana is not the same as he was before - what has happened to him in the short months they were apart? Why is he refusing to speak to her? What fate will he choose - will he become the rightful king of Spearhead and take a life, or will he risk exile and abandonment to save the girl he loves?
