David Gay has produced this booklet by taking his ‘Sabbath Questions: An open letter to Iain Murray’, and stripping it of its references to Iain Murray, Calvin and the Reformed, leaving the work, as its title says, to stand as ‘The Essential Sabbath’. And as such, he hopes, it may reach a wider audience. Gay has chosen his title with deliberation. Not only has he reduced his earlier volume to its essentials, but, as he argues, unless sinners know and experience the true sabbath – spiritual rest through faith in the saving person and work of Christ – eternal disaster awaits them.
There is a second reason behind this work. The accusation most often laid against new-covenant theologians is that of ‘Antinomian!’, with their view of the sabbath being offered as invincible proof of it. This is both a travesty and a tragic mistake. Gay hopes this work may go some way to set the record straight. Not only that. Do not miss his use of ‘tragic’. As before, not to enjoy the true sabbath is the worst of all worlds – and eternity!
