The Gospel of Thomas: Lost Sermons of Jesus Restored: A New Translation for Today's World
This ancient document, rediscovered sayings of Jesus, is now newly translated into modern English. Also these sayings have been uniquely reassembled into two comprehensive sermons: The hidden teachings to his Disciples, and his Public Sermon to the common people.
The original Gospel of Thomas, a full version of which was discovered among documents in Egypt, is a simple yet profound book of sayings, with one following another in what can appear to be no particular order. This new translation takes the approach that those sayings can be re-ordered and reassembled, as with pieces of a long stored puzzle. Here we encounter a refreshing and instructive view of Jesus, with familiar sayings as with those of the canonical Gospels, yet surprisingly different in other aspects. The “secret†insider teachings here inform the reader of a Teacher sometimes conflicted, frustrated, yet still astoundingly optimistic for the future of humanity. This translation recaptures the flow and fluidity of those words, adding to the coherence and meaning of this timeless message.
The Jesus of Thomas’ Gospel instructs and converses with his disciples, establishing the fundamental core of his ministry, as if in a sermon. Additionally a second sermon emerges, as Jesus preaches to the general public in a more positive, message oriented, upbeat and refreshing presentation. Seen together, the true relevance of the duality of this fascinating text can shine through to today’s reader. Each of the 114 logia (verses) is utilized in these sermons, and their conventional numbering is retained for reference purposes.
Following an introduction, this book contains the full sermons to the disciples and to the public, with explanatory documentation, and the numbered logia are then provided again in their original order, to compare and derive additional meaning.
