The Hills of Home: The Farmer's Daughter
Theo Walden learns of love and understanding in her hills of home, plus a whole lot more. Granny teaches her that life isn't always fair or good. Greta fills her young head with ghost stories scary enough to keep her awake at night. Popaw and Daddy show her what it’s like to be mountain men: fair, tough, and yet gentle. Most important, Theo learns that wealth doesn't make a person happy. Love does.
Excerpt from Chapter 17: I studied a while on Cousin. He was older than me, a lot if he was ready to take his bar exams. I studied on Harley. I went to find Momma. “Momma, take me to town.†She turned and looked at me like I was some total stranger that had said the most idiotic thing. “Why?†“I want to get a new dress and some make-up,†I flat out told her. She reached out, almost rested her hand on the hot stove, and then steadied herself on the counter top. “Why?†she asked again. Those had been words she never expected to hear in her life, not from me. She looked the worse for them, unbelieving, confused. “I’ve been thinking about Browning and that cousin of his. I’m nothing but a convenience, a country hick. I’ll give him and Browning a surprise.†Momma’s eyes widened. I saw her expressions change as thoughts flickered through her mind. I had no idea what she was going to do. Give me a tongue lashing, probably. I took a step back, out of slapping range. “Let’s change our clothes first,†she said. Momma bought what I picked out, and it wasn’t a little girl’s dress. It was somewhat old fashioned with a high neck and tight waist. It came just below my knees, yet showing enough leg. “You’ll need these.†Momma picked up my first pair of nylons. “And some real good underwear to go under that dress. It shows things I never knew you had,†She added somewhat embarrassed. The knowledge that came to me wasn’t pleasant. Momma was on the hunt for both her daughters an appropriate husband.
