The Spirit of Laws by Montesquieu (Halcyon Classics)
This Halcyon Classics ebook THE SPIRIT OF LAWS is Montesquieu's seminal work on political theory. Montesquieu (Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, 1689-1755) was a French political thinker who lived during the French Enlightenment. He is famous for his theory of separation of powers, a notion embraced in many modern constitutions (including that of the United States).
Originally published anonymously partly because Montesquieu's works were subject to censorship, Montesquieu spent nearly twenty years researching and writing THE SPIRIT OF LAWS. Montesquieu advocates constitutionalism and the separation of powers, the abolition of slavery, the preservation of civil liberties and the rule of law, and the idea that political and legal institutions ought to reflect the social and geographical character of each particular community.
