Simply put, a Zero waste lifestyle is about aiming to reduce the waste or trash that reaches our landfills, incinerators, pollutes our air, water source and our food chain until we no longer generate waste. It is done through the five Rs practice; Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Rot. The Zero Waste solution puts the focus on meaningful lifestyle changes. We have gone so far from our fore- parent’s practice of minimalist living, and become so used to the idea of consumption and trash that we can no longer recognise that each time we use and dispose of trash, we are adding to the destruction of our planet.
This book was written for the person who wants to make a difference to our planets waste problem, by beginning in their little corner. This book aims to support you in reducing your rubbish creation to ZERO. This is not to say that you will never accumulate waste ever again, but it means that every action you take will eventually have at its core the intention of not creating waste as part of that act. Many have walked this road before and have done it successfully. They’ve made a dent in the awful trash problem that we have all contributed to and are on their way to making that dent a much larger impact through a very mindful practice of zero waste some employing the practice of minimalist living and sustainable living. In turn they have managed to simplify their lives, now enjoy the pleasures of living with less while being financially free and enjoying what is more meaningful.
Research shows that it takes 66 days to form a new habit. This book is a simple, step by step, how to guide and habit forming formula to going zero waste in 66 days. It starts off with a challenge and then shows you how to turn it into a habit. I wrote this book with the hope that after 66 days you would have stuck with the challenge and now developed a new and amazing habit of practising a more sustainable, waste free, healthy, happy way of living. This challenge is broken down into 3 different 22 day segments. Each segment will include challenges from different areas of life, and will gradually increase with intensity on each level. You will be expected to complete one challenge each day and stick with each challenge as you move forward. Along the way you will be provided with a few photos which support the challenge.
Important to your success is Chapter 6 ‘How to stick with a new habit’ which will support you throughout the 66 day challenge. Equally important to your success on this lifestyle change, is the journal in Chapter 7. This journal can be used in its printed form or can be adapted for use in a Bullet journal. The journal will help you to evaluate your progress; what worked well or didn’t, help you identify any saboteurs and support you in reflecting on how you may improve your practice. You will also find bonus zero waste recipes and zero waste DIY ideas.
