The composer of one of the most popular contemporary songs of time, 'You Are My Sunshine', Davis was a nationally popular Country music and Gospel singer from the 1930s into the 1960s, occasionally recording and performing as late as the early 1990s. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He also served for two nonconsecutive terms from 1944 to 1948 and from 1960 to 1964 as the governor of his native Louisiana, USA. Davis developed a smooth, quietly elegant yet stripped down sound, not too different from that of his slightly younger contemporary Gene Autry, with a virtuoso band behind him. Many of Davis' romantic ballads have a certain hint of jauntiness about them that prevents them from ever seeming overly sentimental. He intersperses them with the occasional jaunty Country Blues like 'Hard Hearted Mama,' and it's that balance -- the bouncing between the risquâ€š, Honky Tonk style numbers, the romantic ballads, the Western trail ballads, and the Gospel-themed numbers -- that make Davis' music very easy to take en masse.
