Excerpt from Chapter 3:
“Spisssst, Spisssst,†she hissed when Malone was less than six feet from the bushes she was hiding in. Malone frowned, stood stone still as he lifted his head, and looked around. “Over here,†she whispered. He had a frown on his face as he went toward the bushes and stopped. “Come over here,†she whispered. “I want to talk to you.†His frown turned to surprise as his brows raised. “What tha ….†“Sheeeeeee, be quite. I don’t want anybody to know I’m here.†He stepped closer until he saw her huddled there much like a scared rabbit and then stopped behind the bushes into the edge of the woods. “Billie Hardy, I can’t believe this. What are you doing here hiding in the woods?†“I see you found out my name.†“That I did. How did you get here and what can you possibly want?†He didn’t sound exactly friendly, but he wasn’t being ill tempered. “I need to have a few words with you.†She stood from her squatted position and moved further back into the shelter of the woods. He was grinning as he followed. “You sound serious.†“I am serious.†“Okay, what are you serious about?†“This,†she held out her arm and showed him the teeth punctures on the top and underside of her arm. The entire section of her arm was purple and swollen with pus pockets. Red streaks were starting to creep upward. “Goodness, girl, have you seen a doctor?†He reached for her arm but she jerked away from his fingers. “Not yet, but I will if your father doesn’t leave Walter alone.†His dark brows drew together. “You lost me there.†“Don’t pretend not to know what I’m talking about.†“What I’m talking about is you seeing a doctor. That place is infected in a bad way.†His gaze went from her arm to her face. “Now, just what does my father and your brother have to do with your arm?†“Your dad has sued Walter, and I’m going to sue you.†He looked her straight in the eyes. “Say that again.†“You heard me and you know good and well old Nickel Pincher Stucky is suing my brother.†“He is? What for?†he asked, without reacting to his father’s nickname. Billie’s temper was flaring. “Stop playing stupid.†“I’m not playing stupid. I haven’t been informed of Nicolas suing anyone. Could you please enlighten me on what has you in a turmoil?†“You call him Nicolas? I thought he was your father.†“I’m his son by his first wife, a marriage that didn’t last long. I’ve never called him anything but Nicolas.†“Humph,†Billie grunted. “He’s claiming Walter damaged his Bronco when he pulled him out of the mud.†“Did he?†“No!†“How do you know he didn’t?†“Walter is a mechanic. He also drives a tow truck for the shop. He knows how to pull a vehicle out of the mud without damaging it.†“What damage does Nicolas claim was done?†“How do I know? Ask him.†“I will. Now, how about me driving you to a doctor’s office? Where is the closest one? Boone or Lenoir?†“I’ll not go to no doctor, but I’ll be going to a lawyer if your father keeps on suing Walter.†“I’ll check into it right way. Nicolas is not on the mountain at this time, so I’ll have drive to his house. Can I give you a ride home?†“No!†Her eyes were wide, her expression one of repulsion. “You walked all this way didn’t you?†“It wasn’t far.†“It’s five miles.†“By road, but not up the mountain.†“Please let me take you home,†his tone had turned to cajoling. “No.†“There’s poisonous snakes under every rock, or you could fall off a cliff and break that pretty neck.†“Idiots step on snakes and fall off cliffs. I won’t.†She whirled around and was gone before he could stop her. Some strange feeling was throbbing through her for he had called her pretty.
