Tibet Tibet
Since the release of her album 'Tibet, Tibet' (RW59) in August 1996, her first release for the UK, Yungchen Lhamo has brought her unique interpretation of traditional Tibetan hymns to a much wider audience. On 'Tibet, Tibet', Yungchen Lhamo takes the hitherto mysterious elements of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and, through the sheer communicative beauty of her voice, re-interprets and presents these devotional and celebrational songs in a way that Tibetans and Westerners alike warm to. Much of the power of 'Tibet, Tibet' lies within the unadorned grace of its songs. Backing is kept to a minimum; only the final song of hope, 'Gi Pai Pa Yul Chola', utilises a full orchestra. Music is very much a way of life in Tibetan culture and the voice is the most important element. Within Yungchen's voice, one can hear something of the journey her life has taken and the isolation she has often come across as a Tibetan.
