Often cited as one of the Fat Wreck Chords flagship bands, Strung Out have cemented their prominence in the punk scene through their influential and constantly progressive sound. Over the course of their storied 20 years as a band they have spawned countless imitators, but none have been able to emulate Strung Out s scorching blend of aggressive metal riffs and captivating melodies. With 7 full-lengths, 2 eps, a live album, and a b-sides album to their credit, the band s catalog is formidable, to say the least. With this in mind, and conscious of the fact that they are consistently welcoming new fans into the fold, Strung Out decided it was high time to put together Top Contenders: The Best of Strung Out. Not a whimsically compiled list of a few popular songs for the casual fan, the band made a concerted effort to make Top Contenders just as enticing to the droves of seasoned Strung Out fans out there as well. After tirelessly poring over their vast catalog of songs and bickering (song tears were shed, and even a little blood) over which would make the cut, the guys eventually concocted a track list truly worthy of a Strung Out best of. Not satisfied to stop there, the band headed into the studio to record 3 brand new songs for inclusion on the album. Even further, in an effort to deliver the optimal product for both new and established fans, they enlisted the talents of Ryan Greene the mastermind behind their breakout album Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues, as well as producer to many other Fat Wreck mainstays including NOFX, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Lagwagon, Propagandhi, No Use For A Name, Good Riddance, Snuff, and Hi-Standard) to remix every one of the 26 tracks on Top Contenders. Finally, to compete the fans first sentiment of the album, the layout boasts an homage to their diehard followers with a stunning collage including nearly 500 photos of fans adorned with Strung Out logo tattoos. All in all, the thoughtful construction that went into Top Contenders creates a collection that serves as both a perfect musical reference point for inexperienced listened and a thank you to Strung Out enthusiasts.
