Driven out of town by a fearful sheriff and a shrewish wife, Jake hunter heads west. But on a rocky trail in Arizona Territory, Hunter loses control of his wagon and tumbles down the side of a mountain. He wakes in a place unlike any he has known. Then the beautiful Xiang Li-Sung explains that her father pulled him from the canyon and nursed him back to health. Thankful, Hunter takes his place among the Chinese in their small section of Tall Pine. The white folks of town look down on the Chinese, and take a strong dislike to Hunter because of his close association with them. But with the help of a friendly bartender, he slowly wins over most of them. But there are always some who resist — and pay the consequences.
