U.S. Navy - The Lone Sailor Challenge Coin
1 3/4 inch (44mm) Round
Bronze Antique
With eyes on the horizon, hope for his nation, and his heart on the sea, the lone sailor statue sculpted by Stanley Bleifeld for the Navy Memorial represents every sailor who has served -or will serve -- this nation with the resolve and proficiency every American sailor has displayed since 1775.
To carry this challenge coin identifies a sailor as a brother of the seas, sharing the duties and accomplishments of seagoing Americans from before the nation's founding - waging war gallantly and with honor, showing the colors in hundreds of ports, battling borders and bombers, swabbing decks, manning the torpedoes, and sharing it all with shipmates from every corner of the nation in defense of liberty.
The original sculpture and model for the coin stands at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC, but replicas have been installed in Baton Rouge, LA; Bremerton, WA; Burlington, VT; Dallas, TX; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, IL; Long Beach, CA; Norfolk, VA; North Charleston, SC; San Francisco, CA; Waterloo, IA; and West Haven, CT. Unlike the sculpture, the coin can travel with you or the sailor you choose to honor.
Minted in the USA from special deep-relief coining dies; struck from solid bronze; and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail, the obverse features Bleifeld's senior second class petty officer and his duffel. The reverse features the petty officer from behind, capturing the horizon before him - with room for an engraved message.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this coin will benefit the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation.
