Experiments can be messy. Before you get started, don’t forget to prepare for excess “lava†flows in the area where you are creating your eruptions. With each experiment, keep track of the reaction when the ingredients are mixed. Which combination of ingredients works the best? Which doesn’t have a great reaction? Experiment with additional eruption formulas by adding more drops of dish soap to your recipes to see how the “lava†erupts and flows differently.

Mauna Loa is the biggest volcano on Earth, located on the big island of Hawaii. It has an elevation of 13,681 feet and last erupted in 1984. Also in Hawaii, Mount Kilauea is regarded as one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. There are at least 1,900 active volcanoes around the world. In the U.S. alone, there are 169 geologically active volcanoes. The oldest volcano in the world is Mt. Etna on the island of Sicily, in Italy. Mt. Etna is also Europe’s largest and most active volcano.
