Sir Adrian Boult (1889-1983) gave three symphonic premieres of Vaughan Williams and recorded the symphonies twice. Here, in vintage 1960s stereo from Kingsway Hall and Abbey Road, are the finest fruits of his Indian summer in the recording studio. Composer and conductor, matched to measure, share in sound, a vision of humanity and hard-won experience transcending over half a century: from Whitman and the Sea Symphony to the last, late wintry wordless music of Scott of the Antarctic and Thomas Hardy.
