Au Revoir Simone's debut release, Verses of Comfort, Assurance and Salvation, may clock in at just under a half hour, but its eight songs reveal the engaging balance of lo-fi bedroom pop and understated musical sophistication that has earned the Brooklyn-based trio an enthusiastic international following. From the wistful teenage romanticism of the opening "Through The Backyards" (featured in the season finale of Grey's Anatomy) to the giddy rush of "Hurricanes" and the lusty menace of "And Sleep Al Mar," Au Revoir Simone displays an impressive stylistic range for a group that has chosen to compose their music using only keyboards, drum machines and their sweet vocal harmonies.
