What does it take for a player to become a legitimate star in the NBA? Is it the talent and potential he already has when he makes the jump to the professional league? Is it the right team or system? Is it the time the player needs to develop? Is it the trust and confidence he gets from the franchise? Or is it a combination of those factors?
There have been many players that did not immediately become stars in the NBA for one reason or another. Chauncey Billups was always a great player coming into the NBA. However, he skipped from team to team during his early years trying to find a system and franchise that could turn him into a star player. It was not until 2004, when he was 27 years old, when Billups became a star point guard for a championship team. Two years later at age 29, Chauncey Billups became a perennial All-Star.
In today's NBA, point guard Kyle Lowry was merely a backup playmaker that teams loved because of his defense. But Lowry never had star potential during his early years in the NBA. It was not until he moved to the Toronto Raptors at age 26 when he began developing. Finally, at 28, Lowry became an All-Star point guard for the Raptors.
As far as history would tell us, there have been players that did not immediately make the jump from a college or high school player to an instant NBA star or up-and-coming talent. Sometimes the potential is already there, but there are also times when it only surfaces after experience and training. There are also players that just need to belong to a team that wants them or to a system that fits their playing style. And when all of those factors converge, an instant NBA star player is born.
