Walks, villas and villages on Lake Como...car-free day trips from Milan
Getting around Lake Como in a car can be quite stressful: narrow and often chaotic roads, limited parking, almost always requiring payment. Travelling by car could ruin your entire day in one of the world's most beautiful places. The best way to visit Como and the lake area is by public transport. Many trains arrive from Milan throughout the day. Seeing the lake from a ferry boat on the water is a unique and unforgettable experience We describe fascinating itineraries and carefully chosen day-trips so you can plan a perfect day on Lake Como. We give you all of the information, maps, and links you need to discover amazing places–without a car. We combine walks, hikes, villas and charming historical towns and villages to create an unforgettable day for you. You can count on our providing all the information needed so that your itinerary can be decided at the moment, without spending a lot of time on organising and planning. The proposed itineraries are the result of the author's vast experience. Massimo Lozzi, who is from Como, worked as a guide for Trekking Italy and is currently an instructor for the Italian Alpine Club. Passionate about hiking, he organises excursions around Lake Como for the Cultural Association he is the president of. We provide details about getting to Como from Milan, how to get around Como, and what to see there, how to take ferries and what you can see by boat, what you can see in Lenno, Tremezzo, Bellagio and Varenna; proposing easy walks, accessible to everyone, for getting from one town to the next. Finally, we will explain how to get back to Milan from Lecco, allowing you to explore the lake in a loop, so you can enjoy many different aspects of one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. The guide was designed to be used on a smartphone or tablet. It includes links to transport websites and the best tourism websites so you can do more detailed research if you like. A constantly updated section provides the best hours for public transport to and from the places on the tour, allowing you to keep principal connections in mind. The first chapter describes the proposed itinerary, a loop starting and ending in Milan. You may explore both branches of the lake, Lake Lecco and Lake Como, crossing the lake where the two branches of Lake Lario (another name for Lake Como) merge, and one of the most lovely parts of the entire lake. The loop includes some of the most beautiful towns on the lake: Como, Lenno, Tremezzo, Cadenabbia, Bellagio, Varenna, Lecco. The itinerary includes sections on trains, ferries and on foot. The minimum duration of a day trip is six hours, but you are free to extend your day out. We give you all the information needed, along with timetables for coordinating the different modes of transportation along the way. We also suggest some common route combinations. Just choose your departure time and the rest of the itinerary can be decided during your journey. In the second chapter we describe some additional hour-long itineraries in various towns along the loop. You are free to decide, according to time constrictions or particular interests, to follow them or to stay on the main route, avoiding detours. Chapter three proposes several possible variations. For more athletic types, we propose long sections of the tour that can be made by bicycle. We also provide variations starting from Como instead of Milan.
