Yamashita plays Giuliani: Duo Concertante, Op.25 for Violin & Guitar; Serenade, Op.19 for Violin, Cello & Guitar; Gran Duetto Concertante, Op.52 for Flute & Guitar
The music of Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829) has great appeal for guitarists, and practically nobody else. It is lightweight almost to the vanishing point, and I've seldom heard a piece of his that stuck in my mind. But he did write plenty of music for the guitar, providing the instrument with some classical period repertoire. (His contemporary Sor wrote much better music, but he was only one composer.) The Serenade is the most interesting piece here, while the Duo Concertante goes on a lot longer than its material justifies. Fine performances by all, but this is still a disc for very specialized tastes. --Leslie Gerber
