Yellowstone Mileposts
As people travel through Yellowstone National Park each day, they often come across buildings or points of interest along the roadway for which there is no publicly-accessible background information. Every single day the park's rangers, tour guides, and concession employees field hundreds of questions about these sites. And many have said, "There ought to be a book..." Well, now there is! If you've ever wondered to yourself: What's that group of buildings behind the Old Faithful Inn? Why does the road go this way when it used to go that way? What's down that unmarked, gated-off road just north of here? What happened to that old building that used to be over there ten years ago? Why do the buildings in one location look so vastly different from those in other locations? Why does that feature have the name it does and what's the history behind it? Then this book is for you. It is intended for a variety of audiences including park rangers newly assigned to Yellowstone, park employees, tour guides, researchers, and visitors who wish to have a more in-depth understanding of the microhistory of the individual points of interest throughout the park. The book has hundreds of pages of information previously known only to a handful of long-time park employees and historians. Yellowstone Mileposts is composed of two major sections. The first provides the reader with a mile-by-mile guide to the more than 400 miles of park roads, complete with GPS coordinates. The second is a building-by-building history of all of the significant tructures in the park's nine commercial developments. It is one of the most comprehensive guides to Yellowstone National Park available to the public.
