Keep fingers protected during every save - the finger spines stiffen and resist pressure from high-speed balls. To determine size, measure around widest part of palm, excluding thumb, and add 1 inch. Most goalkeepers prefer gloves a little larger than they need, giving them a larger surface area to stop the ball without sacrificing control.
