a+u 18:07, 574: Aires Mateus (A+U, 574)
This issue of a+u is our first monograph dedicated to Aires Mateus, an architectural practice run by brothers, Manuel and Francisco Mateus, that is based in Lisbon, Portugal. Over the last 30 years, Aires Mateus has gained international recognition for their poetic, yet respectful contemporary reinterpretation of Portuguese architectural tradition. Even as their projects have increased in scale - they started with small-scale projects, and have since expanded over time - they have always kept to their belief in paying careful attention to details and are constantly exploring through experiments on ways to innovate with light, form, and toying with the concept of timelessness, while sticking to the idea of permanence in their design. In this issue, we will introduce the profound qualities of spaces in their work.
