Shokay Yak down is hand combed from yaks that live in the Himalayan regions of Western China. Unlike wool, the scales of yak fiber are in a wavy mosaic pattern resulting in a very smooth yarn fiber that does not itch. Each yak only produces about 100 grams of fine down per year making this a fine luxury yarn. Yak yarn is warmer than wool and as soft as cashmere. It is an extremely durable, lightweight fiber that preserves heat in the winter yet breathes for comfort in warmer weather. Yak yarn is completely odorless, does not shed and maintains warmth even when wet. Fun Yak Facts: Each yak produces about 100 grams of fine downy fiber per year. The average fineness of down from an adult yak is 18-20 microns, with the average length of fiber being 30-40mm. Yaks that live in higher altitudes produce finer fiber. There are only 14 million yaks in the world, of which 13 million are found in Western China. The people of Tibet are totally dependant on their yak herds for the fiber, milk, meat, bones and even their dung, which they use for fuel.
