The Dark One's city has been impregnable for two hundred years as his empire continued a war for revenge. In Battle Mage Visions, the war has come to a stalemate on several fronts, but Sebastian and the spies work to discover the weaknesses of the Dark One's fortress to come up with a plan to destroy Alus' most powerful warlock. Winter holds the north, but when travel should be the harvest Sebastian is moving between countries using the empire's magic to gather secrets and allies. Still it isn't easy dodging orcs, goblins and the men and elves who have joined the emperor.
While Sebastian is kept busy building weapons, sharing spells and new magic with the wizards and mages of his country, other forces work to undermine Southwall. Palose, the dark mage, can use the same magic and works for the Dark One sowing rebellion in the southern cities which haven't been exposed to the hardships of the war. Blaming the king for his taxes for a war that they no longer believe has anything to do with them, they set their eyes on getting an edge and that is Sebastian and his magic.
