Cracker Cowboys of Florida (Illustrated) (1895)
Frederic Sackrider Remington (1861 – 1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in depictions of the Old American West, specifically concentrating on the last quarter of the 19th-century American West and images of cowboys, American Indians, and the U. S. Cavalry. In 1895 while he was on assignment for Harper’s Magazine, he was sent to Florida and wrote this article about his trip. In this article he contrasted Florida Cracker Cowboys with familiar cowboys of the western US, including differences in cattle types, saddle types, holding pens, clothing, and more. His famous illustrations accompanied this article.
