TALES OF FLORIDA CRACKERS: History, Hunting, and Humor
Sit down with these seven as they recall earlier days in Florida and you will travel back in time with them. These are the families who dared to settle an area left forlorn and empty after the Seminole wars. They are tales of struggle and hardships but also ones of humor. It took grit, stamina, patience, and faith in those days to survive. May 2019 As the one who tried to capture this lifestyle and put it in writing, I hope I have done them well because my last living 'Cracker', Murray McDonald, has now departed from the land he loved. I shall miss him as a friend and a storyteller, as I miss all the others who allowed me to publish their tales of earlier days in Florida. Those days have changed dramatically as we moved from horse and buggy to space exploration. Most of these families were the pioneers of a land almost deserted by the tragic Seminole Wars, but that is another story in the history of Florida. I feel honored to have known them and to have been given the opportunity to put their tales into print. Many times I have been asked, "Why are they called Crackers?" Some contend it came from the cowboys cracking their whip, others thought it meant backwoods dwellers, or perhaps those who gathered around the cracker barrel in the local store and swapped stories. At book signings, many times a grinning younger person wold come up and proudly announce, "I'm a Cracker! My grandfather came here in the 1800's." So I guess they are all right; Florida was all backwoods for those early settlers, many were cowboys, and they all loved swapping tales. These hardy pioneer settlers were the backbone of our present State of Florida. I have had to say farewell to each one of my Crackers, but may they live on with their stories. Enjoy them as much as I have. Ann Creal Taylor
