This episode in Hunt’s life is full of surprises, adventure, and shootouts. Hunt intervenes to prevent a local boy from abusing his adopted daughter, Phyllis. The boy’s angry father begins to search for Hunt to seek revenge. Hunt’s men are sent on various missions to track down thieves and murderers. On one mission, Hunt has put Horse in charge and despite his objection of leading the mission it ends with a successful mission and Horse meets a frontier legend. A gang of marauding thieves and killers that are ravaging towns and robbing banks travel California hit Portland and turn East, and the Army can’t catch the fast-moving evasive gang. Hunt is notified that the gang is crossing northern Utah and will soon enter Colorado and their direct path will take them to Hunt’s ranches and his herds of cattle, and Clydesdales. With Charles Crawford’s horse ranches in the path, as well as Denver itself being in the direct path, Hunt leads the men on a mission to head off the gang and stop them from getting near the ranches, and the town of Denver. A gun battle follows and three of Hunt’s men are injured in the shootout and the U.S. Marshals are saved from annihilation by the U.S. Cavalry. Hunt loses one of his ranch workers, and everyone is shaken up at the ranches. Hunt is surprised with a visit from U.S. Marshal Earl Jefferson, and Earl travels to Green River with Hunt to see the ranches that Hunt has purchased. While in Green River, the local bank is robbed and Hunt is involved in a shootout and loses his horse. The thieves turn out to be a rancher that is losing his ranch and before leaving town Hunt talks to the banker about buying the ranch.
