Pianist Tamas Vasary (b. 1933, Hungary) made his first recordings for Deutsche Grammophon in 1958, and from that moment on his international career flourished, especially during the decades of the 1960s-70s, when his discography grew by leaps and bounds. It was toward the end of this period that his conducting career then took off, and he has held a number of prominent orchestral posts since the 1980s, experiencing a second round of successes in this field of endeavor. This Pentatone release of Mozarts Piano Concertos Nos. 14 & 26, KV449 & KV537 (Coronation) finds Mr. Vasary assuming both his professional roles, pianist and conductor, in this case of the Berlin Philharmonic, in what are typically satisfying performances of these works by an esteemed 20th c. pianist, in smartly enhanced SACD sound.
