This short story is fiction. But it is about real people, real Marine heroes and real events. Only the names and places are fictional. This story takes place during the early years of the Vietnam War. If you were there then you probably know who these heroes were. You may even be one of them! In another war in another time this sniper team could have been called THE DESERT RATS or THE DIRTY DOZEN. But for this story they are called Ritter’s Critters. They are almost all misfits. What they do well astonishes other Jarheads but no matter how crazy they seem, they always – nearly always – come out alive.
Ritter’s Critters are made up of team leader Sergeant Tom Ritter of El Paso who everyone naturally calls Tex. Then there is Rat the tunnel guy; Gopher the little but fast guy; Boomer the explosives expert; Shelley the radioman; Gypsy or Gyp, the knife expert; and Three or Three-Step because he carries a leather bag of deadly Three-Step vipers as special gifts for the Viet Cong. How an out-spoken freckle-faced kid with red hair becomes a seldom talking night stalking killer will tear your heart. But this happened and it is true. (Chris Kyle’s film story titled THE AMERICAN SNIPER was one of the many terrible tragedies that came out of our recent wars.) This is another.
Bogged down in torrential midnight monsoon rains Sniper Sergeant Tom Ritter whose Starlight scope acts like a kid’s kaleidoscope under such conditions shows you a trick he uses to pick off black pajama-clad VC carrying supplies along a rain-drenched jungle trail. He does it repeatedly in total darkness with the regular scope on his rifle
Later the team is sent into Cong Country to raise some havoc. Three-Step discovers a giant enemy ammo dump. Boomer sets timed explosives to send it all to Kingdom come. The sniper team is in the blast zone when they find Gopher standing on a very eager to explode land mine. How can they save him when they already are running out of time!
This tale will keep your adrenals pumping from midnight sniping to how to take out a Chinese General carrying plans for a nuclear device to our enemies. All seven men are dressed alike, carrying the same looking briefcases! Tex has only seconds to choose which of these look-alikes is his target. Which one is it??? Grit your teeth and dig in your heels for this one!
