EXCERPT
Rob joined Bren in laughter, a deep, rolling sound that warmed her to her toes. Just because Kristen had maneuvered them into meeting didn’t mean he wasn’t a nice guy. Just because he’d sought her out tonight didn’t mean he was looking for a relationship. He probably didn’t know that many people in Helena yet and could use a friend. And she always had room for one more.
“Go get something to eat,†Marisa said. “Hey, Rob, have you had a hot dog yet?â€
Okay, so it wasn’t just Kristen. Fighting them all was too much effort. She was an adult and allowed to have male friends. Kristen and Marisa couldn’t make her fall for Rob, or make him have feelings for her.
“I was headed over there when I got sidetracked by apples hanging from strings.†Rob’s grin took in both of them. “I might have to challenge Jase and Todd to this contest after a bit.â€
“Oh, you’re on,†Marisa said quickly. “I can hardly wait to see you guys with your hands tied behind your backs trying to catch an apple.â€
Bren chuckled. “Ditto. It’s definitely not the fast way to eat. I think Lila’s gotten three bites in the last ten minutes.â€
Rob’s eyes gleamed. “Of course, if the guys do it, you gals should, too. Fair’s fair.â€
“Oh, I don’t think so—†began Marisa.
“Sure, why not?†Bren raised her chin and looked at Rob. “Or we could string them all at the same time and have a race.â€
He quirked an eyebrow. “You must have done this many times if you think you can take me on and win.â€
“A few.†She raised her eyebrows right back at him. “I’m willing to take the chance. I’ve lost before and lived through it.â€
