â€œWhy do you have a pen for her if you donâ€™t keep her in it?â€

â€œI told you. Itâ€™s for when Iâ€™m at work.â€ Eden didnâ€™t bother to glance at Jacob. Pansy required every speck of her attention. Heâ€™d never understand, anyway.

â€œWomen.â€

The half-mutter did it. She pivoted at the top of the ramp, blocking Pansy onto the small fenced rooftop. â€œShe gets lonely. Did you keep your dog in its kennel even when you were home?â€

â€œAnd youâ€™d be wrong,â€ she shot back. â€œPansy is sweet and loves to cuddle. If youâ€™ve ever tried to snuggle a goldfish, you might get the difference.â€

â€œMy fish never escaped like this Houdini. They never stole my screws. Fish are very soothing to watch.â€ Jacob shrugged. â€œIâ€™ll take fish any day.â€

And to think sheâ€™d admired his muscles. How much less manly could he be than to prefer goldfish over dogs?
