â€œDo you really go to the same church as I do? But that doesnâ€™t make sense. You play Santa.â€

It was Heath's turn to be confused. â€œWhatâ€™s that got to do with anything?â€

Sonya picked a bit of glaze off the top of her doughnut with a pink fingernail and popped it in her mouth. She eyed him and heaved a sigh. â€œI donâ€™t think itâ€™s right to lie to little kids. They have enough trouble keeping fantasy and reality separate.â€

His fingers began twirling his coffee cup again. â€œI see. So you think my job is right up there with the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy.â€

She raised her eyebrows. â€œIsnâ€™t it?â€

â€œI donâ€™t see it that way.â€

â€œOf course you donâ€™t. Just another day at the office, right?â€

Heath couldnâ€™t help his sardonic laugh. â€œRight. I work ten hours a week for one month a year as Santa, plus a party here and there. You canâ€™t seriously think Iâ€™m in this for the money.â€

Uncertainty crossed her face. â€œOkay. But why?â€

â€œWhy be Santa?â€

â€œWhy pretend to be.â€

Heath shook his head. Of course sheâ€™d distinguish. â€œI like making little kids happy. I like their hugs and their shy smiles. I like being a bright spot in their day.â€

â€œBut itâ€™s a lie.â€ She picked another fleck of maple off her doughnut.

â€œSonya, I am real. Iâ€™m the guy who brightens their day.â€

â€œOnly because youâ€™re in that red suit.â€ She eyed him. â€œMust take a lot of padding.â€

He twitched a grin that sheâ€™d noticed. â€œIâ€™m sure Iâ€™m not the only Santa who hits the gym on a regular basis.â€
