The Centurion Chronicles Book 7 The Battle for Gaul
Caesar kills two deserters on the way to Rome. The Centurion saves Quintus’ life before he stays at his sister’s house & learns that Publius Clodius, one of Caesar’s supporters has been assassinated by Titus Milo, one of Pompey’s supporters. Leaving a high-priced bordello drunk Quintus is attacked by two robbers The Centurion saves Quintus’ life. At his villa Caesar learns from Lentulus, his Rome-based spy, that perhaps more importantly, Marcus Crassus has been defeated in the battle of Carrhae in Mesopotamia, leaving the fragile triumvirate in tatters. Facing political uncertainty & the possibility he may be stripped of his power Caesar, Quintus, the Praetorian Guard & the Centurion leave immediately for Gaul. Arriving at his fortified camp Caesar learns that rebellious Gallic chieftains have met & plotted in Cenabum where they slaughtered Roman settlers. More importantly, two powerful chiefs, the Carduci Lucterius & the Arverni Vercingetorix have raised sizeable armies & are actively planning a massive revolt. Lucterius is marching in a westerly direction toward poorly defended Narbonne in southern France. Located on the Via Domitia, Narbonne connects Italy to Spain. If Narbonne falls all of Spain will be vulnerable to invading Gauls. Tribune Gaius Volusenus is promoted to General Favius’ second-in-command. Caesar sends the Centurion & Scout Lutatius Livia on a secret reconnaissance mission to determine if Lucterius is actually moving toward Narbonne or if it is a feint meant to distract Caesar & his outnumbered legions from an impending attack by Vercingetorix’ army that lies to the north. After shadowing the Gallic army for several days the Centurion & Scout Livia are surprised when it is attacked by the speculatores who usually spend their winters sleeping in Spain. The attack causes Lucterius’ army to retreat to the northeast. Fearing a trick Caesar sends the Centurion & the cavalry commander General Aemilius ahead to thwart a possible attack. They engage the enemy constantly, fighting a delaying action until Caesar marches to Narbonne where he reinforces the garrison. Caesar crosses the Cevennes mountain range in winter &, having been reinforced by several legions attacks Vellaunodunum in the land of the Senones. Vercingetorix attacks Gorgobina while Caesar consolidates his legions prior to attacking Vellaunodunum where he is victorious. While on a scouting mission the Centurion is captured by the Carnutes & taken to Cenabum which is then conquered by Caesar. The Centurion escapes & rejoins his unit. Caesar conquers Noviodunum & plans the next phase of his conquest of Gaul.
