The Dinosaur Files Newsletter: May/June, 2016
Last night I looked at an old, old, copy of Peary Rader's original magazine, The Iron Man. Later, of course, the name changed to Iron Man, which is how most of us know and remember it. The cover proudly proclaims that the magazine was "The magazine of quality information for all men interested in physical superiority." The inside cover contains the magazine's mission statement. It's a good one:
"This magazine is dedicated to the sport of weightlifting and bodybuilding. It is our wish that it be of service in guiding man to perfection, physically, mentally and spiritually."
The editorial that opened the magazine continued this theme. In it, Peary Rader urged his readers to be strong and powerful, but above all else, to be good examples to others. Peary opened his editorial by referencing the cover photo showing Harry Good, then one of the top weightlifters in the USA, holding 300 pounds overhead. He urged readers to let Harry Good's photo inspire them to better lifting and harder training – but he also urged them to let the photo inspire them to become better men. Good lifted with magnificent skill, remarkable strength, perfect balance and supreme confidence. That was how Peary Rader wanted his readers to lift – but it also was how he wanted them to live.
