From within Chapter 20:
When we reached the Sheriffs’ Department, I went in to get two of the officers to help get Ray Dean out of the hearse. Neither Ella May nor I were up to another round with him.
There were questioning looks as they dragged him out in his underwear. Both of them pretended not to notice that Ella May was wearing his clothes, until curiosity got the best of the new officer.
“What’s with . . .†the new officer finally said as he nodded toward Ray Dean and then Ella May.
“Don’t ask,†the other officer interrupted him. “Most of them are upset with Scotty Adams once she gets them here. It’s becoming her trade mark. Even the night shift is becoming familiar with her bounty hunting abilities.â€
I cringed knowing Manning Woodring worked the nightshift.
I followed them inside with the keys to the cuffs. I didn’t want to leave my cuffs behind, plus I knew Ray Dean would be put into the shower and given a pretty orange jumpsuit to wear.
When I got back to the hearse with the cuffs and body receipt, I asked Ella May if she wanted to try for number three.
“I’m getting’ kinda hungry,†she said. “Let’s go back to the office, fix us a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and then file for a while. I’m tuckered out.â€
