The Ho Chi Minh Trail. The mountainous maze of paths, trails, roads and bridges has been used by the indigenous mountain tribes of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia for centuries. They use it to live, trade and fight amongst some of the steepest mountains and thickest jungles in the world. The Trail was used to fight the Chinese, Japanese, French, Laotians and finally the Government of South Vietnam and the American allied forces. The Ho Chi Minh Trail was the life-line for the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army in the South. The seemingly never-ending supply line was a testament to North Vietnam’s willingness to sacrifice people and equipment in their effort to spread Communism throughout the Southeast Asian region. Cars, trucks, bicycles, people made that arduous journey to the South and kept improving the Trail as they made the journey. Efforts to stop the flow of war materials through I Corps, was finally given to the United States Marine Corps. “Stop the flow of supplies in the damn North before they can even get one foot into South Vietnam.... That’s my goal... Kill them up there in the North before they can come down here and kill another one of my Marines.†“It’s a tall order, general but I have the man in mind that can accomplish that, general.†Colonel Davidson said nodding his head in agreement with General Letcher, the new head of Intelligence for the 1st Marine Division. “One man...? What is one man going to be able to do...?†General Letcher was doubtful that one man could do anything to stop the supplies from coming down the Trail and into the South. He wanted to send the whole Division north to wipe out the NVA, but the panty wearing politicians in Washington would never go along with that. “He’s not just a man, or for that matter not just a Marine. He’s a Blackfeet warrior.â€
