Tailing her cheating husband, Jim Barrington, Nadine witnesses the torture and murder of two men by members of the Barrington Society. While reporting the murders, she realizes the Society has people working within the FBI. Pursued by the Society so she can’t testify against them and the FBI so she can, she vanishes. From Chapter 6: … she needed to talk to him, give him some kind of explanation for her tears. “My parents were killed in an accident when I was five years old. ... My Aunt Lucy took me in and raised me all by herself. She wanted me to go to college and make something of myself. I became an attorney. When I graduated, I managed to get a job in Raleigh at a law firm. I took on a pro bono case and was forced to resign because of it.†From Chapter 2: Nadine had lost her job because she tried to help a woman in need. In her opinion something wasn't right in the cosmic universe and she wanted to fix it in the best way she knew how. … She went running home to Aunt Lucy and Louisa Mae. “You did the right thing,†Aunt Lucy said. “Mind you that making a living is important, but a person is supposed to help their fellow man once in a while. It's the Christian way and should never be denied. Do what's right, child. Always do what your heart and mind tells you is right.†… Nadine applied for a job as a public defender in a little town in upper Tennessee called Barrington - named after the man who'd made the nearly deserted piece of land into a prosperous town. … The one thing that puzzled her most was that one of the doctors who worked at the small, local hospital took an interest in her. It just so happened, his name was James Samuel Barrington III, the grandson of the original James Samuel Barrington, but everyone called him Jim. He was pushing forty and had never been married. From Chapter 19: “They won't be convicted,†Nadine said from the backseat as though she was talking to herself. “They'll have me killed before I can testify against them. The Society couldn't have existed all these years without loyal members and their families. There's no way the FBI will be able to arrest everyone or protect me from them.
