On great value Double CD, three outstanding original albums from acclaimed singer / songwriter JERRY JEFF WALKER: Mr. Bojangles (1968), Five Years Gone (1969) and Bein' Free (1970). Widely known as the writer of the oft-covered and immensely popular 'Mr. Bojangles', Walker came to prominence in the early 1970s as part of the progressive outlaw Country scene around Austin, Texas. His landmark mid-70s albums Jerry Jeff Walker, Walker's Collectibles, Ridin' High, It's a Good Night for Singin' and Contrary to Ordinary marked his transition to bona fide Texas hero. Prior to that, in 1968 he had recorded the first of three albums for ATCO Records in New York with producer Tom Dowd. Mr. Bojangles remains an enduring mix of folk and country containing several of his most famous songs, the bitter-sweet 'Mr Bojangles', 'Gypsy Songman' and 'Round and Round'. Session players included Ron Carter and David Bromberg. Five Years Gone was more in line with contemporary singer / songwriters Bob Dylan, John Stewart and Danny O Keefe, a mix of folk-rock backed by Nashville session players Weldon Myrick, Hargus Robbins, David Briggs, Norbert Putnam etc. Bein' Free is more bluesy and countrified, featuring contributions from Jim Dickinson, Mike Utley and Don Brooks on rambunctious songs 'I'm Gonna Tell on You', 'Stoney' and 'Vince Triple-O Martin'. 'Bein' Free is a freewheeling and fun affair from one of country music s most original Yankee practitioners': All Music Guide. Superb audio, liner notes and two bonus tracks, this collection is a must have for the Jerry Jeff Walker aficionado.
