The Dinosaur Files Quarterly: Issue #2: March, 2015
It's been a little less than three months since we released the first issue of the new quarterly Dinosaur Files, but I wanted to get this out to you without waiting any longer. There are some great articles in this issue, and I'm eager to see what you think about them.
I think you're going to like them quite a bit. I've enjoyed working on this issue of the Files enormously, and I've been having some great workouts in the evening after working all day on the little monster. Remember, I get to research and write my own articles and columns, select the letters for Mesozoic Mail, read and review all of the other articles that come in the door, correspond with other Dinos as necessary, select photos, write photo captions, and generally immerse myself in the Files for three or four long and busy weeks.
As you can imagine, after spending all day working on the Files, I'm in a perfect frame of mind for some serious training – so the iron has been humming out in the garage!
It makes me wonder what it must have been like to work on the grand old magazines in the history of the Iron Game. What was it like for Bob Hoffman to edit and publish Strength and Health back in the 1930's, 40's and 50's? I imagine that Hoffman had some pretty good workouts in the York Barbell Club gym!
Had could he not have had great workouts? His life's work was a continual source of inspiration to him!
You get a sense of this in all of Hoffman's writing. He opened his 1939 masterpiece, Weightlifting, by stating: "I am a weightlifter. I like weight lifting and weight lifters. Training with and the lifting of weights, which to me was at first a pleasurable form of exercise, ...has become my life's work.â€
He added: "I am proud that I am a builder of men. I am pleased and proud to have had the opportunity to meet through this sport the many thousands of personal friends I have throughout the world. This book is respectfully dedicated to those men who already know of weight lifting.â€
He concluded: "If this book is the means of helping of helping American weightlifting another notch higher, the means of revolutionizing the lives of more men who need physical training, I'll be very happy. If a man will try weight lifting for a few weeks he will be a weight lifter for the rest of his life. Sample once the glad to be alive feeling that weight lifters enjoy and you'll find the hours spent with weight training to be the most valuable hours you have lived.â€
I echo Hoffman's sentiments. I would simply change the reference to "weight lifting" to "strength training," which is a broader term, and I'd include both men and women under the tent. But other than that, I feel exactly the same way.
It is an honor and a privilege to bring the Dinosaur Files to you. And it is an honor and a privilege to speak with you through these pages – and to share our part in the continuing journey of the Iron Warriors. Let's do our best to make Bob Hoffman and all other Founding Fathers of the Iron Game pleased and proud of everything we do.
