Can love be the only way to overcome fears and grief?
Mary Shroder has a loving husband, caring father, and devoted mother, and soon she will be adding a new addition to their happy family. As she carries the new life within her, the drought in their small Amish community threatens to steal their crops. Her husband is faithful to work in the fields each day, but Mary gets little respite in the hot house.
When she suddenly loses her beloved father, she realizes just how much he meant to her, but she’s also forever grateful for everything he taught her in life. She watches her husband struggle with the concept of what it means to be a good husband and father, and longs for a way to make things clear for him. However, the intense heat may rob them of the chance to be parents, just the way it stole Mary’s late father.
“He is a bitter man who doesn’t want to help his shtamm. He is so fixated on making sure the garden is gut and working as hard as he possibly can. I’m sorry, Mary. He just doesn’t seem to care enough to want to fix what is taking place here.â€
“You have to try, though. What happens if he passes one day and you still have things you two haven’t talked about?â€
“You are making this to be a bigger deal than it actually is.â€
“Nee, I’m not!†she yelled.
Aaron stopped shoveling and looked at his wife. She glared at him with angry eyes. Tears formed in the corners and began to run down her cheeks. He stuck the shovel into the ground and walked over to her. He tried to give her a hug, but she pushed him away and stomped back to the house. Maria was just as much in shock as Aaron was.
What had just happened? Mary had never raised her voice to him like that. No one had ever heard her yell.
Aaron Shroder loves his pretty young wife more than anything in the world, and can’t wait to meet his unborn son or daughter. As he ponders the age-old questions that have plagued fathers-to-be for millennia, he considers his troubled relationship with his own father. The two rarely speak, as his father cares only for his fields, with little time for a wife or children over the years.
The crops begin to fail, dying one by one, and Aaron is faced with the very real possibility that they’ll have nothing for the coming winter. With a baby on the way, a mother-in-law added to the family, and the loss of the father-in-law who was more like a father, Aaron must rely on his faith in God to make it through the spiritual and physical drought that threatens to steal everything he loves most…
Will Aaron find the lesson to be learned through the storm or will it finally claim even his faith in God?
Can Mary help her husband understand the situation before he is forced to live with regret—both as a father and as a son?
